Basic Biscuits
  1. 1

Gather all ingredients and preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).

  2. 2

Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a large mixing bowl; cut in the shortening with a fork or pastry blender until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

Pour the milk into the flour mixture while stirring with a fork, and mix in the milk until the dough is soft, moist, and pulls away from the side of the bowl.

  4. 4

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it briefly, 5 to 7 times.

  5. 5

Roll the dough into a 1/2 inch thick sheet and cut out biscuits with a floured cookie cutter; press the unused dough together and repeat the rolling and cutting.

  6. 6

Place the biscuits on ungreased baking sheets and bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

  7. 7

    Enjoy!
