New England Molasses Brown Bread

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan, tapping out any extra flour.

    Combine whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar in a large bowl. Stir in the molasses and buttermilk just until mixed. Gently fold in cranberries and raisins if using. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

    Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan. Let cool completely before slicing.
