Challah Made in a Bread Machine
  1. 1

Add warm water, sugar, oil, eggs, honey, salt, flour, and yeast to the bread machine in the listed order, or use the order your manufacturer suggests if different. Choose the Dough cycle and press Start.

  2. 2

When the cycle is complete, take the dough out and set it on a lightly floured board. Punch it down and let it rest for 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Meanwhile, grease a baking tray.

  4. 4

Split the dough in half, then split each half into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into ropes about 12 to 14 inches long. Braid 3 ropes into a loaf to make 2 loaves. Carefully place the loaves on the prepared baking tray. Mist the loaves with water and cover them loosely with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm, draft-free spot until doubled in size, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

  5. 5

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  6. 6

For the egg wash, beat the egg and water together in a small bowl until well combined.

  7. 7

Brush the tops and sides of the loaves with the egg wash.

  8. 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. If the loaves start browning too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil.
