    Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

    Beat the egg whites in a clean glass or metal bowl until foamy. Add the salt and cream of tartar, then keep beating until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar while beating until stiff peaks form. When the meringue is stiff, remove it from the mixer. Stir in the vanilla and fold in the candy canes, chocolate chips, and walnuts. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. If you cannot bake all the cookies at once, refrigerate the extras until the others are finished.

    Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until dry enough to peel easily from the cookie sheet. Cool the cookies, then store in an airtight tin.
