Pouding Chômeur (Poor Man’s Pudding)
  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. 2

Sift the flour and baking powder into a small bowl.

  3. 3

In a large bowl, beat the sugar, 1/4 cup margarine, and the egg with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the flour mixture in two additions, alternating with the milk, stirring the batter briefly after each addition just to combine. Pour the batter into the prepared dish.

  4. 4

Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Stir in the brown sugar, the remaining 1/4 cup margarine, and the vanilla. Return to a boil and cook for 2 minutes. Pour the sauce over the batter.

  5. 5

Bake in the preheated oven until the center is set, about 45 minutes.
