  1. 1

Gather all the ingredients. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate.

  2. 2

Put the potatoes in a pot; cover with salted water and bring to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.

  3. 3

Drain, then mash with 2 tablespoons of the butter and the garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste; set aside.

  4. 4

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, herbes de Provence, and nutmeg; cook and stir until the beef is lightly browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes.

  5. 5

Spread the beef evenly in the prepared pie plate. Cover evenly with the peas; spread the mashed potatoes over the peas. Dot the top of the pie with the remaining butter.

  6. 6

Bake, uncovered, in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown and the filling is heated through, about 20 minutes.
