    In a medium bowl, cream the shortening and brown sugar. Stir in the vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; stir this into the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Cover the dough and chill until firm, about 1 hour.

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease the cookie sheets.

    Roll the chilled dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 48 rectangles. Place them 1/2 inch apart on the prepared cookie sheets.

    Bake in the preheated oven until crisp and the edges are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Move the crackers from the baking sheet to wire racks to cool.
