    Put the cabbage in a large pot. Add water and bring it to a boil. Reduce to low and simmer until tender, about 10 to 15 minutes.

    Meanwhile, place the bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 8 minutes. Drain the bacon on paper towels, crumble it, and set aside.

    Position an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven broiler.

    Drain the cabbage and move it to a baking dish; drizzle with melted butter and sprinkle with the crumbled bacon and nutmeg.

    Broil under the preheated broiler until the top is lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Serve with salt, pepper, and vinegar as desired.
