    In a saucepan, combine butternut squash, water, maple syrup, rum, and nutmeg; bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring now and then, until the squash is tender, about 15 minutes.

    Using a slotted spoon, remove the butternut squash from the saucepan and transfer it to a serving dish, keeping the liquid in the pan. Continue to simmer the liquid until it reduces and thickens, 5 to 10 minutes; pour it over the butternut squash.
