    Take each asparagus spear and snap it near the end where it naturally breaks to remove the woody parts. Put the asparagus in a microwave-safe glass container with a lid. Add water.

    Roll the lemon on a flat surface to help release the juice; cut it in half. Squeeze both halves over the asparagus. Sprinkle with pepper and garlic powder.

    Cover the container and place it in the microwave. Cook on high until tender-crisp, 5 to 6 minutes. Drain and let it stand for 5 minutes before serving.
