Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

In a medium bowl, combine the dates and butter. Pour boiling water over them and let stand until cool.

Stir the cooled date mixture to break up any clumps. Add the brown sugar and egg, and mix until well blended.

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir the flour mixture into the date mixture just until blended. Stir in the walnuts, then pour the batter into the prepared pan.
