    Put the oats in a small bowl and pour in the buttermilk. Let it sit at room temperature for two hours.

    Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups or line them with paper liners.

    In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, and brown sugar. Stir in the oat/buttermilk mixture, applesauce, and egg; mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin cups.

    Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
