    In a large pot over medium heat, cook the onions in oil until just tender.

    Stir in the sausage and cook for 5 minutes more.

    Add the cabbage, potatoes, beans, ketchup, consomme and water to the pot.

    Season with garlic powder, pepper and salt.

    Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes.

    Stir in the vinegar and simmer for 1 hour more. Add more water if needed.
