Classic Vanilla Custard

    Assemble all the ingredients.

    Put the milk, vanilla extract, and butter into a saucepan.

    Cook over medium heat, stirring, until it reaches a simmer; take it off the heat before it boils.

    In a bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar dissolves.

    Return the saucepan to low heat. Slowly pour in the egg mixture while whisking constantly, and cook until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, 5 to 10 minutes.

    Serve warm, or transfer the custard to a large bowl and cover.
