Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Butter a heavy-bottomed 10-inch oven-safe skillet, then sprinkle sugar evenly over the butter.

Arrange the apple quarters, rounded sides down, over the butter and sugar in a circular pattern.

Set the skillet over medium-high heat and cook until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves and starts to caramelize. Continue cooking until the apples soften and the caramel turns brown, 10 to 12 minutes, then remove from the heat.

Lightly flour the work surface and roll the pie dough into an 11-inch circle. Pinch the edge to form a ruffled crust.

Lay the crust over the apples and tuck the edges down around the apples.

Bake in the preheated oven until the crust is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes. Place a plate on top of the pan and carefully invert to release the tarte. Scrape any apples left in the pan back onto the top of the crust.
