    In a large bowl, stir the yeast into 1 cup warm water to dissolve, then stir in 1/4 cup sugar.

    In a separate large bowl, stir the salt into 5 cups warm water to dissolve, then stir in the shortening and the remaining 1/4 cup sugar.

    After the yeast foams, stir the salt mixture into the yeast mixture.

    Mix in 1/2 of the flour, then add the remaining flour 2 cups at a time, beating well after each addition.

    When the dough comes together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and stretchy.

    Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in it, and turn the dough to coat with oil.

    Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

    Shape the dough into about 30 to 40 rounds and place them on lightly greased baking sheets.

    Cover the rolls with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in size, about 40 minutes.

    Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
