- 1 Large Vidalia onion, sliced
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) sugar
- 1 Pinch salt
- 8 Ounces (oz) macaroni, packaged
- 1 Cup bread crumbs, packaged
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) dried mustard
- 1 Clove garlic, minced
- 1 Pinch cayenne pepper
- 3 Tablespoons (tbsp) flour, sifted
- 1.75 Cups milk
- 0.75 Cup chicken broth
- 8 Ounces (oz) Cheddar cheese, grated
- 0.5 Cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 1 Pinch salt, to taste
- 1 Pinch black pepper, to taste
Steps
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized, about 25 minutes. Set aside.
- Cook the macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the dried mustard, garlic, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute, then whisk in the flour. Cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
