Ingredients

  • 1 - 12 Pounds (lb) whole turkey, thawed
  • 0.25 - Cups vegetable oil
  • 5 - Whole apples, cored and quartered
  • 5 - Pounds (lb) whole apples

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Unbind legs of turkey, if necessary. Pat turkey dry with paper towels. Place turkey into a roasting pan with a lid, and rub oil inside and outside the turkey.
  3. Stuff the body and neck cavity with apple quarters. Arrange whole apples around the turkey in the roasting pan. Scatter any extra apple quarters into the pan. Cover the roasting pan.
  4. Roast in the preheated oven until the skin is brown and the meat begins to separate from the legs, approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the turkey breast should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C). To further brown the skin, remove the lid during the last 20 minutes of roasting. Use pan drippings for gravy, if desired.

Cook's Notes

  • Be sure not to use too large of a roasting pan. If using an aluminum (throw-away) roasting pan, tent aluminum foil over the turkey so that it does not touch the turkey, ensuring the foil is as "sealed" as possible.
  • Baking time varies based on the size of the turkey and your oven. If in doubt, follow the rule of thumb of 15 minutes per pound of turkey, but start taking the temperature early, as this recipe cooks the bird remarkably fast.
  • Salt is not added to this recipe, even when making the gravy, but use your discretion!
