Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 Cup milk
  • 1 Pinch salt, to taste
  • 1 Pinch pepper, to taste
  • 20 Ounces pearl onions
  • 50 Buttery round crackers, crumbled
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, melted

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a saucepan, whisk together 2 tablespoons of softened butter, 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, and 1 cup of milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
  3. Place the pearl onions in a 2-quart casserole dish and pour the prepared white sauce over them.
  4. In a sauté pan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and toast the crumbled crackers until they are golden brown.
  5. Sprinkle the toasted cracker crumbs over the onions in the casserole dish.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the dish is steaming hot and the topping is crisp.
