Ingredients

  • 1 Pound (lb) dry navy beans, drained
  • 4 Quarts (qt) water
  • 1 Pound (lb) leftover ham bone, shredded
  • 1 Medium onion, minced
  • 2 Medium carrots, sliced
  • 2 Stalks celery, minced
  • 0.25 Teaspoons (tsp) garlic powder
  • 0.25 Teaspoons (tsp) black pepper, ground
  • 0.5 Teaspoons (tsp) paprika

Steps

  1. In a large stockpot, combine the water, ham bone, and pre-soaked navy beans. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer until the beans are nearly soft.
  2. Remove the ham bone from the pot and cut off any remaining meat. Set the meat aside.
  3. Take out one-third of the beans and mash them using a potato masher or food processor.
  4. Return the mashed beans and ham meat to the stockpot. Add the minced onion, sliced carrots, minced celery, garlic powder, ground black pepper, and paprika. If you have drippings from a previously cooked ham, add them now for extra flavor.
  5. Continue to simmer the soup until the vegetables are tender.
  6. Serve hot and enjoy the savory flavors of this comforting soup.
