Ingredients

  • 4 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Cup white sugar
  • 1.5 Cups shortening
  • 0.75 Cups milk
  • 0.0625 Teaspoon (tsp) anise oil
  • 2 Ounces (oz) sesame seeds

Steps

  1. Combine the all-purpose flour and white sugar in a bowl. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  2. If using anise oil, add it to 0.5 cups of the milk. Gradually add this milk mixture to the flour mixture, mixing until the dough holds together. Add more milk as needed.
  3. Pull off small portions of dough and roll them between your palms into finger-sized rolls.
  4. Roll the dough in sesame seeds. For better adhesion, dip the seeds in sugared water, then spread them on a clean, lint-free cloth. Roll the dough on the cloth with the seeds, then flatten to about 0.25-inch thickness.
  5. Cut the dough into 2-inch strips and place them on an ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven, cool completely, and store in an airtight container.

Enjoy these traditional Italian cookies with a cup of coffee or tea!
