Ingredients

  • 1 Pound (lb) pork, ground
  • 1 Whole egg
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) cornstarch
  • 2 Teaspoons (tsp) sesame oil, divided
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) fresh ginger root, minced
  • 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) monosodium glutamate (MSG) (Optional)
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) salt
  • 1 Pinch salt, to taste
  • 2 Whole green onions, divided
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) vegetable oil
  • 1 Whole head napa cabbage, torn
  • 2 Cups chicken broth, low-sodium
  • 2 Cups water
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) soy sauce

Steps

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground pork, egg, cornstarch, 2 teaspoons of sesame oil, ginger, MSG (if using), salt, and half of the divided green onions. Use your hands to combine until evenly mixed. Set aside.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the torn napa cabbage and stir-fry until it begins to wilt, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Pour in the chicken broth, water, and soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium.
  4. Form the pork mixture into 1-inch meatballs using a spoon. Drop them into the boiling soup. Once all meatballs are added, cover with a lid and simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Taste the soup and adjust the salt if necessary. Garnish with the remaining divided green onions and a drizzle of sesame oil before serving.
