Ingredients
- 4 Cups all-purpose flour
- 4 Tablespoons (tbsp) white sugar
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) baking soda
- 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) baking powder
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) salt
- 0.5 Cup butter, softened
- 1 Cup buttermilk
- 1 Large egg
- 0.25 Cup butter, melted
- 0.25 Cup buttermilk
Steps
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a large baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of buttermilk and the egg.
- Stir the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it slightly. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and 0.25 cup of buttermilk. Brush the loaf with this mixture.
- Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
- Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
