Ingredients

  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) shortening
  • 3.5 Cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 4 Teaspoons (tsp) baking powder
  • 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) salt
  • 1.5 Cups white sugar
  • 1 Cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 Large eggs, whisked
  • 0.33 Cup orange juice
  • 0.33 Cup milk
  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) anise extract
  • 1 Drop lemon extract
  • 1 Cup dates, minced
  • 0.5 Cup walnuts, chopped

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a fluted tube pan (such as Bundt) with shortening and dust with flour.
  2. Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the sugar and butter with a spoon until creamy. Mix in the whisked eggs.
  4. Combine the orange juice and milk in another bowl; add this mixture to the sugar and butter mixture.
  5. Stir in the sifted flour mixture, anise extract, and lemon extract until well combined.
  6. Fold in the minced dates and chopped walnuts. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until the top of the cake springs back when touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  8. Cool the cake in the pan for 20 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to finish cooling for an additional 15 to 25 minutes.
