Serving Size: 6

Cooking Time: 85 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 Pounds (lb) smoked boneless ham
  • 1 Pinch salt, to taste
  • 1 Pinch pepper, to taste
  • 6 Whole potatoes, peeled
  • 1 Large head cabbage, divided
  • 2 Large onions, divided
  • 0.5 Pounds (lb) carrots, sliced
  • 1 Pound (lb) fresh green beans, divided

Steps

  1. Place the smoked ham into a large pot and add enough water to cover it completely. Season the water with salt and pepper. Cover the pot and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. After 30 minutes, add the peeled potatoes, divided cabbage, divided onions, and sliced carrots to the pot. Tie the divided green beans into a bundle using kitchen string to keep them together, and add them to the pot as well. Re-cover the pot and continue to simmer for an additional 25 minutes, or until the carrots and potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Carefully transfer the smoked ham to a serving dish. Arrange the cooked vegetables around the meat for a beautiful presentation. Allow the ham to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing it into thick, juicy pieces.
  4. Serve the sliced ham alongside the tender vegetables, and enjoy the comforting flavors of this traditional Irish meal.
