Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) butter, melted
  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) onion, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) green bell pepper, minced
  • 0.5 Cups (cup) water
  • 1 Cup ketchup
  • 2 Teaspoons (tsp) mustard powder
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) kosher salt
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) celery seed
  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) brown sugar, packed
  • 2 Teaspoons (tsp) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) smoked paprika
  • 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) garlic powder

Steps

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced onion and green bell pepper, sautéing until the onion is translucent and the pepper is softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Stir in the water, ketchup, mustard powder, kosher salt, celery seed, brown sugar, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 10 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For a thicker sauce, continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly. For best results, allow the sauce to rest for at least an hour before using to let the flavors meld together.
  6. Use immediately on your choice of meat or vegetables, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
