- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) unsalted butter
- 1.5 Pounds (lb) russet potatoes, peeled
- 1 Large turnip, peeled
- 1.5 Teaspoons (tsp) fresh thyme leaves, divided
- 1 Pinch salt, to taste
- 1 Pinch ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 Cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided
- 1 Cup half-and-half
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 9-inch gratin dish.
- Slice the potatoes and turnip into 1/8-inch-thick slices using a mandoline.
- Layer half of the potatoes and turnip slices in the bottom of the prepared gratin dish. Sprinkle half of the thyme leaves over the top; season with salt and black pepper. Top with 1 cup of Monterey Jack cheese.
- Layer the remaining potatoes and turnip slices on top of the cheese layer. Sprinkle the remaining thyme leaves over the top; season with salt and black pepper. Pour the half-and-half evenly over the top; cover with the remaining 1 cup of Monterey Jack cheese. Cover the gratin dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. Uncover and continue baking until browned and bubbly, about 10 minutes more. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
