  • 1 - 9 Inch unbaked deep dish pie crust
  • 1 Cup (cup) all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) packed brown sugar
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) white sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) cinnamon, ground
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) butter
  • 7 Whole Granny Smith apples, peeled
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) lemon juice
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) white sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons (tbsp) all-purpose flour
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) cinnamon, ground
  • 0.125 Teaspoon (tsp) nutmeg, ground

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place the rack in the lowest position.
  2. To Make Topping: In a bowl, mix 1 cup flour, 0.5 cup brown sugar, 0.5 cup white sugar, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in the butter until the mixture is moist, crumbly, and clumps together easily.
  3. To Make Filling: Peel, core, and slice the apples into approximately 1/8 inch slices. In another bowl, toss the apple slices with 0.5 cup white sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle in 3 tablespoons flour and stir until the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Layer the apple slices in the pie shell, mounding them higher in the middle. Pour any leftover juice from the apple mixture over the apples. Pat the brown sugar topping evenly over the apples to form a top crust.
  5. Place the pie on a cookie sheet to catch any dripping juice. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the center of the pie offers no resistance. If the top starts to darken too much, cover with foil. Cool on a wire rack before serving.
