Serving Size: 8
Cooking Time: 55 minutes
Ingredients
- 0.5 Cup (c) milk, divided
- 1 Large egg, whisked
- 1 Cup (c) all-purpose flour
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) garlic powder
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) kosher salt
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) paprika
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) ground black pepper
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) dried thyme
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) dried oregano
- 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) poultry seasoning
- 1 4 Pounds (lb) whole chicken, divided
- 3 Cups (c) vegetable oil
- 1 Cup (c) chicken broth
Steps
- In a medium bowl, whisk together 0.5 cups of milk and the whisked egg until well combined. In a separate large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, garlic powder, salt, paprika, black pepper, thyme, oregano, and poultry seasoning. Seal the bag and shake to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
- Add the chicken pieces to the bag, seal, and shake to coat the chicken evenly with the flour mixture. Dip each piece of chicken into the milk and egg mixture, then return it to the flour mixture for a second coating. Reserve any remaining flour mixture for the gravy.
- In a large, heavy skillet, heat the vegetable oil to 365°F (185°C). Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the chicken, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides, about 10 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking the chicken until it is cooked through and tender, about 20 more minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
- Carefully discard all but 2 tablespoons of the frying oil from the skillet. Over low heat, add 2 tablespoons of the reserved flour mixture to the oil, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the remaining 0.5 cups of milk and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Serve the fried chicken hot, drizzled with the creamy pan gravy. Enjoy the savory, herb-infused flavors with every bite.
