  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) butter, softened
  • 2.5 Pounds (lb) potatoes, peeled
  • 2 Large onions, minced
  • 1 Pinch salt, to taste
  • 1 Pinch pepper, to taste
  • 1 Cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 0.75 Cup white wine
  • 0.33 Cup water
  • 0.75 Cup heavy cream

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with softened butter.
  2. Toss the peeled potatoes and minced onions with salt and pepper. Spread 1/3 of the potato mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle half of the Gruyère cheese over the potatoes, then add another layer of potatoes.
  4. Sprinkle on the remaining Gruyère cheese, then layer the remaining potatoes on top.
  5. Mix the water and wine together and pour over the potatoes in the dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are tender, about 1 hour 15 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and pour the cream evenly over the potatoes. Bake, uncovered, for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the cream and brown the top.
