Ingredients

  • 9 Ounces (oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 Cup butter, softened
  • 3 Large egg yolks
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) vanilla extract
  • 2.5 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Pinch salt
  • 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) baking powder
  • 3 Large egg whites
  • 8 Ounces (oz) walnuts, ground
  • 1 Cup white sugar
  • 0.33 Cup confectioners' sugar, for decoration

Steps

  1. In a medium bowl, cream together the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Stir in the egg yolks and vanilla extract until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, stirring until fully incorporated.
  3. Divide the dough into 5 equal parts, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the dough to firm up.
  4. The next day, in a clean bowl, beat the egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add the white sugar while continuing to beat until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the ground walnuts to create the filling.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to a thickness of 1/4 to 1/8 inch. Cut the dough into 3-inch squares. Place 1/2 teaspoon of the walnut filling in the center of each square, then roll up from corner to corner to form a crescent shape.
  6. Arrange the kifli on cookie sheets and refrigerate until they are firm, about 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  8. Bake the kifli in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they are lightly browned.
  9. Allow the kifli to cool completely on a wire rack, then roll them in confectioners' sugar for a sweet finish.
