- 2.25 Cups dried split peas, rinsed
- 2 Quarts cold water
- 1.5 Pounds ham bone
- 2 Whole onions, sliced
- 0.5 Teaspoon salt
- 0.25 Teaspoon black pepper, ground
- 1 Pinch dried marjoram
- 3 Stalks celery, minced
- 3 Whole carrots, minced
- 1 Whole potato, diced
Steps
- Place the split peas in a large stockpot and cover with several inches of cold water. Let soak for 1 hour to overnight. Drain, rinse, and return peas to the pot.
- Add 2 quarts of cold water, ham bone, onions, salt, black pepper, and marjoram to the stockpot. Cover, bring to a boil, and simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Remove the ham bone, cut off the meat, dice it, and return the meat to the soup.
- Add the minced celery, carrots, and diced potato to the pot.
