Ingredients

  • 16 Ounces (oz) package dried navy beans
  • 7 Cups water
  • 1 Whole ham bone
  • 2 Cups diced ham
  • 0.25 Cups onion, minced
  • 0.5 Teaspoons (tsp) salt
  • 1 Pinch black pepper, ground
  • 1 Whole bay leaf
  • 0.5 Cups carrots, sliced
  • 0.5 Cups celery, sliced

Steps

  1. Rinse the navy beans and transfer them to a large stockpot. Add 7 cups of water and bring to a boil. Simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 1 hour.
  2. Add the ham bone, diced ham, minced onion, salt, ground black pepper, and bay leaf to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, until the beans are soft.
  3. Add the sliced carrots and celery to the pot. Cook for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
  4. Remove the ham bone from the pot and place it on a cutting board. Once cool enough to handle, remove any meat from the bone and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
  5. Stir the meat back into the soup until warmed through. Serve and enjoy!
