- 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) olive oil
- 1 Large onion, minced
- 3 Cloves garlic, minced
- 2 Pounds (lb) lean ground beef
- 1 8 Ounces (oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 14.5 Ounces (oz) can diced tomatoes
- 2.5 Cups water
- 0.33 Cups chili powder
- 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) ground cumin
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) salt
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) ground black pepper
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) dried Mexican oregano
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) cayenne pepper
- 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) white sugar
- 3 15 Ounces (oz) cans pinto beans, drained
Steps
- Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over high heat. Add the onion and garlic, cooking and stirring until fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the saucepan, cooking and stirring frequently until the beef is crumbly and no longer pink, approximately 5 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and water.
- Season the mixture with chili powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, oregano, cayenne, and sugar.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 1 hour.
- Remove the cover and stir in the drained pinto beans. Replace the cover and continue cooking until the beans are fully heated through, about 15 minutes.
- Serve hot, optionally topped with shredded Cheddar cheese and fresh chopped onion.
