  • 2.25 Cups dried split peas, rinsed
  • 2 Quarts cold water
  • 1.5 Pounds ham bone
  • 2 Whole onions, sliced
  • 0.5 Teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 Teaspoon black pepper, ground
  • 1 Pinch dried marjoram
  • 3 Stalks celery, minced
  • 3 Whole carrots, minced
  • 1 Whole potato, diced

Steps

  1. Place the split peas in a large stockpot and cover with several inches of cold water. Let soak for 1 hour to overnight. Drain, rinse, and return peas to the pot.
  2. Add 2 quarts of cold water, ham bone, onions, salt, black pepper, and marjoram to the stockpot. Cover, bring to a boil, and simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove the ham bone, cut off the meat, dice it, and return the meat to the soup.
  4. Add the minced celery, carrots, and diced potato to the pot.
