Ingredients

  • 4 Large green tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 Large eggs, whisked
  • 0.5 Cups (cup) milk
  • 1 Cup (cup) all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) cornmeal
  • 0.5 Cup (cup) bread crumbs
  • 2 Teaspoon (tsp) coarse kosher salt
  • 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) black pepper, ground
  • 1 Quart (qt) vegetable oil
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) garlic powder
  • 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) cayenne pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) onion powder

Steps

  1. Gather all ingredients and prepare your workspace by lining a baking sheet with paper towels and placing a cooling rack on top.
  2. Slice the green tomatoes into 0.5-inch thick slices, discarding the ends.
  3. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  4. On a plate, spread the flour. On another plate, mix the cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and onion powder.
  5. Dredge each tomato slice in the flour, then dip into the egg and milk mixture, and finally coat thoroughly with the cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a large deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  7. Fry the tomato slices in batches of 4 or 5, ensuring they do not touch. Fry until golden brown and crispy on one side, then flip and fry the other side.
  8. Transfer the fried tomatoes to the prepared cooling rack to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve hot with a side of zesty remoulade sauce for dipping. Enjoy the crispy, tangy goodness!
