  • 1 Cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 8 Ounces package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 20 Ounces can apple pie filling

Steps

  1. Melt 0.25 cups of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and cook until tender. Set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, mix 0.75 cups of softened butter, honey, brown sugar, and white sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing each until blended.
  5. Combine the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ground cloves, ground ginger, and salt. Stir into the batter, alternating with the milk.
  6. Stir in the chopped walnuts and cooked apples until evenly distributed. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
  8. For the candied walnuts, whip the egg whites in a clean bowl until foamy. Stir in the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and walnuts. Spread on a baking sheet.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven until toasted and fragrant, about 10 minutes. Cool completely.
  10. For the frosting, mix together the softened butter, confectioners' sugar, and softened cream cheese until smooth.
  11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread with a thin layer of cream cheese icing. Top with most of the apple filling.
  12. Place the other cake layer on top, bottom side up. Spread remaining cream cheese icing over the top and sides.
