Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) cold water
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) cornstarch
  • 0.5 Pound (lb) ground pork
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) garlic, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) fresh ginger root, minced
  • 16 Ounces (oz) package firm tofu, divided
  • 5 Tablespoons (tbsp) soy sauce, low sodium preferred
  • 2 Tablespoons (tbsp) hot bean sauce
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) white sugar
  • 3 Green onions, sliced
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) sesame oil
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) rice vinegar

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, mix the cold water and cornstarch until smooth; set aside.
  2. In a small skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground pork for about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger, cooking until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  4. Gently add the tofu to the skillet, cooking for 2 minutes. Season with soy sauce, hot bean sauce, and sugar, stirring to combine.
  5. Stir in the cooked pork and sliced green onions. Add the cornstarch mixture, cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.
  6. Finish by stirring in the sesame oil and, if desired, a splash of rice vinegar to balance the flavors.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with additional green onions if desired. Enjoy with steamed rice for a complete meal.
