Ingredients
- 9 Thick slices bacon, diced
- 1 Medium onion, minced
- 56 Ounces (oz) tomato sauce
- 1.5 Teaspoons (tsp) Italian seasoning
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) fennel seed
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) dried oregano
- 2 Pounds (lb) Italian sausage links
- 2 Pints (pt) part-skim ricotta cheese
- 0.33 Cups milk
- 2 Large eggs
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) fresh parsley, minced
- 1 Teaspoon (tsp) dried oregano
- 16 Ounces (oz) package lasagna noodles
- 8 Slices provolone cheese
- 6 Cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
Steps
- In a large pan over medium heat, brown the diced bacon and minced onion until the bacon is crisp and the onion is translucent, about 7 to 9 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, fennel seed, and dried oregano.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer until thick, about 4 to 6 hours.
- When the sauce is almost ready, brown the sausage links in a large skillet.
- Drain on paper towels and cut into 1-inch pieces.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the part-skim ricotta cheese, milk, large eggs, fresh parsley, and dried oregano.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Spread 1 cup of the sauce over the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan.
- Layer with 1/3 of the lasagna noodles, 1/2 of the ricotta mixture, 1/2 of the sausage pieces, 2 cups of shredded mozzarella, 4 slices of provolone, and 1/3 of the sauce.
- Repeat the layers once more, then top with the remaining noodles.
- Spread the remaining sauce over the noodles and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella.
- Cover the lasagna with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours.
- Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes to allow the cheese to brown slightly.
