Ingredients

  • 2 Italian sausage links, casings removed
  • 1 Pound (lb) lean ground beef
  • 1 Whole yellow onion, minced
  • 2 Whole garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) olive oil
  • 15 Ounces (oz) can tomato sauce
  • 14.5 Ounces (oz) can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 0.25 Cups fresh oregano, torn
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) salt
  • 1 Teaspoon (tsp) dried basil
  • 1 Whole bay leaf
  • 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) black pepper, ground
  • 16 Ounces (oz) package uncooked spaghetti
  • 0.5 Cups Parmesan cheese, grated

Steps

  1. Slice sausages lengthwise, leaving them attached along one side; lay flat in a large skillet. Cook over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes, turning once. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add ground beef, onion, garlic, and olive oil over medium heat. Cook and stir until the onion is translucent and the beef is browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes. Drain all but 2 tablespoons of fat from the skillet.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, whole peeled tomatoes, oregano, salt, basil, bay leaf, and black pepper. Simmer uncovered over low heat until flavors have blended, about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Remove and discard the bay leaf.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  5. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and stir spaghetti into the sauce.
  6. Divide the spaghetti and sauce among oven-safe plates. Top each with a cooked, opened sausage and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  7. Place plates in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and begins to brown, about 5 to 10 minutes. Serve hot.
