Rambutan is a tropical fruit known for its distinctive appearance and sweet, mildly tangy flavor. It is small, round, or oval-shaped, about the size of a golf ball, and covered in a thick, hairy, spiky skin that ranges from red to orange or yellow when ripe. The name "rambutan" is derived from the Malay word for "hair," which refers to the fruit's spiky exterior.
Once the outer shell is peeled away, the flesh inside is translucent white or pale pink, similar in texture to a lychee. The flesh is juicy, tender, and has a mildly sweet, floral flavor with a hint of sourness. In the center of the fruit is a single seed, which is usually discarded.
Rambutans are rich in vitamin C, fiber, and other antioxidants, making them both a delicious and healthy snack. They are typically enjoyed fresh, but can also be added to fruit salads, desserts, or smoothies. The fruit is popular in Southeast Asian countries, especially in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
