Ingredients

  • 0.33 Cups shortening
  • 1 Cup white sugar
  • 2 Whole eggs
  • 1 Teaspoon rosewater
  • 2 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 Teaspoon salt

Steps

  1. Mix the shortening, sugar, eggs, and rosewater until the mixture is fluffy. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour and salt, then incorporate this into the butter mixture. The dough will be soft. Chill the dough for several hours or overnight.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease or line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. Using one-third of the dough at a time (keep the rest refrigerated), roll the dough into balls about 3/4 inch in diameter. Place them on the cookie sheets and flatten them with your hand to about half their original thickness. Imagine the flattened cookie as a clock face and make two slits, each 1/2 inch long, at the 10:00 and 2:00 positions. Pinch the bottom to form the "base" of a petal. Sprinkle with red or pink decorator's sugar.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until the bottoms are lightly browned. Avoid browning the tops of the cookies.
