Ingredients
- 1 Pound (lb) great Northern beans, soaked
- 0.5 Pound (lb) cooked ham, minced
- 0.5 Cup brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) onion powder
- 1 Tablespoon (tbsp) dried parsley
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) garlic salt
- 0.5 Teaspoon (tsp) black pepper
- 0.25 Teaspoon (tsp) cayenne pepper
- 8 Cups water
- 1 Medium onion, minced
- 0.5 Cup green bell pepper, minced
- 0.5 Cup red bell pepper, minced
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) cumin, ground
- 2 Teaspoons (tsp) garlic, minced
- 1 Pound (lb) turkey kielbasa, sliced
- 4 Tablespoons (tbsp) all-purpose flour
Steps
- Gather all the ingredients and prepare them as specified.
- In a slow cooker, combine the soaked beans, minced ham, brown sugar, onion powder, dried parsley, garlic salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, minced onion, green and red bell peppers, ground cumin, and minced garlic.
- Pour enough water into the slow cooker to cover the mixture by about 2 inches.
- Cover and cook on Low for 12 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- About 6 hours into cooking, add the sliced turkey kielbasa to the slow cooker.
- After 11 hours, if the mixture is too soupy, remove 1 cup of liquid and let it cool. Whisk in the all-purpose flour until smooth, then return the mixture to the slow cooker to thicken the broth to a light gravy consistency.
- Continue cooking for the remaining hour, allowing the flavors to meld and the broth to thicken.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy the sweet and spicy harmony of this comforting dish.
