  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. 2

Cut the shortening into 2 cups of self-rising flour in a bowl with a pastry cutter until the shortening is in small pea-sized pieces. Add the water, 1 tablespoon at a time, just until the dough comes together and is workable. Divide the dough into 2 balls. On a well-floured surface, roll one dough ball into a piece about 9 inches square and 1/4 inch thick. Place the dough in the bottom of a 9x9-inch baking dish.

  3. 3

In the same bowl used to mix the dough, add the blackberries with their juice, 3/4 cup of sugar, and 1/3 cup of self-rising flour. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then pour the filling over the crust. Roll out the remaining dough ball into a square about 9 inches square, and cut it into strips. Lay the strips over the filling. Cut the butter into thin slices and place the slices over the strips of dough. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of sugar.

  4. 4

Bake in the preheated oven until the top crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, 30 to 40 minutes.

How easyChef Pro scores recipes and products

easyChef Pro analyzes up to 41 nutrients using data sourced from USDA and other verified food databases. Its scoring method uses the nutrients relevant to nutrition quality, calorie density, processing level, and your selected health goal. Recipes and food products get a health score from 0 to 100, calculated using consistent rules instead of being estimated by AI. The same nutrition data, serving size and health goal will produce the same result.

The calculation evaluates nutrients, calorie density, processing level, and how well the food supports your selected health goal. Protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients can strengthen the score. High amounts of sodium, saturated fat, added sugar and other nutrients may lower it.

Your health goal also matters. easyChef Pro evaluates recipes and products across six health areas and adjusts their importance for your selected goal. This means the same food may be a better fit for one health goal than another.

For recipes, changing an ingredient, quantity or serving size changes the nutrition and may change the score. Remix the recipe in easyChef Pro to calculate fresh nutrition and scores for the version you actually make. Product scores are based on the nutrition and serving information associated with that specific product.
