Combine the yeast, water, and sugar in a large bowl, stir until the sugar dissolves, and let it sit until a creamy layer forms on top, about 5 minutes. Stir in the oil, then sprinkle the yeast mixture with 2 tablespoons of salt, 2 tablespoons of poppy seeds, 2 tablespoons of dried onion, 1 tablespoon of dried garlic, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add the flour a cup at a time up to 6 cups, then continue by half-cups if needed to make a dough that is elastic but not sticky.
- 2
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Shape the dough into a compact round, place it in an oiled bowl, and turn it several times to oil the surface. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- 3
Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut the dough into 2 equal pieces. For 3-strand braided loaves, cut each piece into 3 pieces. On a floured surface, roll the small pieces into ropes about thumb-thick and about 12 inches long, making them thicker in the middle and thinner at the ends. Pinch 3 ropes together at the top and braid them: starting with the strand on the right, move it left over the middle strand (that strand becomes the new middle). Take the far-left strand and move it over the new middle. Keep braiding, alternating sides each time, until the loaf is fully braided, then pinch the ends together and tuck them underneath for a neat finish. Place the loaves on the prepared baking sheets. Cover the loaves and let them rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
- 4
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a small bowl, mix sesame seeds, kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon of poppy seeds, 1/2 teaspoon of dried onion, and 1/2 teaspoon of dried garlic. Brush the loaves with beaten egg and sprinkle them with the seed mixture.
- 5
Bake in the preheated oven until the loaves are cooked through and golden brown, 45 to 60 minutes. Check for doneness after 45 minutes of baking.

How easyChef Pro scores recipes and products
easyChef Pro analyzes up to 41 nutrients using data sourced from USDA and other verified food databases. Its scoring method uses the nutrients relevant to nutrition quality, calorie density, processing level, and your selected health goal. Recipes and food products get a health score from 0 to 100, calculated using consistent rules instead of being estimated by AI. The same nutrition data, serving size and health goal will produce the same result.
The calculation evaluates nutrients, calorie density, processing level, and how well the food supports your selected health goal. Protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients can strengthen the score. High amounts of sodium, saturated fat, added sugar and other nutrients may lower it.
Your health goal also matters. easyChef Pro evaluates recipes and products across six health areas and adjusts their importance for your selected goal. This means the same food may be a better fit for one health goal than another.
For recipes, changing an ingredient, quantity or serving size changes the nutrition and may change the score. Remix the recipe in easyChef Pro to calculate fresh nutrition and scores for the version you actually make. Product scores are based on the nutrition and serving information associated with that specific product.
