Heat 1 cup of dry sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Do not stir until you see the sugar beginning to melt and bubble. Once the sugar is fully melted and golden brown, pour it into a 9 inch glass or ceramic pie plate and tilt the plate to coat.

In a large bowl, combine the milk, remaining sugar, vanilla, and eggs and mix until well blended. Pour the mixture into the pie plate.
