Mom's Tzimus

Mom's Tzimus is a nostalgic holiday side that highlights the natural sweetness of prunes and carrots, rounded out with tender potato for a comforting, fruit-forward bite. A hint of lemon brightens the rich, jammy sauce, and matzo meal can be added for a heartier texture. Perfect for Rosh Hashanah or Passover, it pairs beautifully with roasted meats or as a standalone side.

Mom's Tzimus
  1. 1

Put the prunes in a large saucepan and add just enough water to barely cover them while you peel and cut the potatoes and carrots.

  2. 2

Add the potatoes, carrots, lemon juice, and sugar to the water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat.

  3. 3

Simmer until the carrots are very tender and the mixture is thick, about 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes.

  4. 4

If you want a thicker tzimus, stir in the matzo meal and simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
