    Put the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with salted water; bring to a boil. Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes; drain. Let cool in a large bowl.

    Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir the ground beef and the onion in the hot skillet until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Stir in the green beans and the condensed soup until well mixed; transfer to the prepared casserole dish.

    Mash the cooled potatoes with the warm milk, the beaten egg, the garlic, the pepper, and the salt until smooth; spread evenly over the beef mixture. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese.
