Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and oil. Add the onion; cook, stirring, until lightly browned, 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Put the rice in a 9x13-inch casserole dish. Add the onion and stir until the rice is well coated. Set the dish on a baking sheet.
