BBQ Chicken Sandwiches

Tender pulled chicken is simmered with a tangy-sweet barbecue sauce, then piled onto soft buns and topped with crisp coleslaw for contrast. BBQ Chicken Sandwiches balance smoky depth with bright acidity and a touch of honeyed sweetness, making them ideal for casual dinners, game days, or feeding a hungry crowd.

  1. 1

Place the chicken in a large pot and add enough water to cover; bring to a boil. Cook until the chicken comes off the bone easily, about 3 hours.

  2. 2

While the chicken cooks, combine the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, garlic, honey, steak sauce, lemon juice, and liquid smoke in a saucepan.

  3. 3

Stir to mix, then season with salt and pepper.

  4. 4

Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

  5. 5

Remove from the heat and set aside so the flavors can blend until the chicken is ready.

  6. 6

Move the cooked chicken to a cutting board. Remove the meat and discard the skin and bones. Chop or shred the meat into small pieces.

  7. 7

Add the chicken to the sauce and stir to combine. Cook over medium-low until the BBQ flavor soaks into the chicken, about 15 minutes.

  8. 8

Spoon the chicken onto buns and top with coleslaw.
